Certainly, he is a rather livelier piece of show business than other political leaders (certainly livelier than Gordon Brown). Certainly too, his blend of sex, machismo, conspicuous wealth and direct and indire...
But... is Silvio Berlusconi a sort of magician? It seems like there is nothing behind him. Where is the country? I can't believe the thing is all in his media power. I'm afraid Mr B is a symptom, not the problem. At least if we analyze the thing because we want to "support" Italy as a country

Personalmente non credo che altri Paesi corrano il rischio di "imitazione". Il caso Berlusconi è unico anche perchè è la conseguenza di una serie di contingenze che si sono verificate in italia. Se così è, c'è solo da iniziare a costruire l'"after B"

he's both the symptom and the problem: nobody cares anymore about politics and italian politicians have turned into a oligarchic elite endlessly spawning clientelism and decay. Democracy cannot work when people are too ignorant as here in Italy (not a coincidence that in ancient athens the column of the democratic system was an intensive cultural policy that included ALL citizens regardless their income)

Berlusconi is simply a frontrunner. Not for the fact he is a businessman in power but for the way he runs politics and pursues consensus (in Italy newspapers play a relevant role in conditioning public opinion and TV schedules - and they are not in his hands at all). And he is substantially a symptom: widespread inalbility of people to understand true problems (which are becoming more and more complex) and to distinguish between true and false messages...
